What is Botox?

Dr. Cheryl Burgess describes Botox as a neuromodulator, a specific type of injection treatment that offers Washington, DC, area patients a way to combat unwanted fine lines and wrinkles. Botox and other neuromodulators are best at treating skin imperfections caused by muscle tension. This includes many lines and folds on the upper portions of the face, specifically the forehead folds, the glabellar lines (the lines between the eyebrows, sometimes known as the “elevens”), and crow’s feet that develop around the eyes. 

These injections offer a temporary solution for these imperfections, with most injectable treatments lasting several months before additional injections may be required to maintain the results and smoothen the skin.

What can I expect from my upcoming Botox injections?

Botox injections are done quickly and easily in our office. Our Board-certified dermatologist at the Center for Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery works directly with patients to ensure they are good candidates for this or other cosmetic injectables available at our Washington, DC, and Annapolis, Maryland locations. 

We start with an evaluation to determine if the specific areas you want to address can be achieved using Botox injections. Then, we review your medical history. If you are cleared for Botox injections, we begin by cleansing the skin to remove makeup or other impurities from the skin. Then, injections are made right where needed to make the improvements patients desire. 

While they may be slightly uncomfortable, they are often well-tolerated by patients. After the procedure, most patients return to their usual daily routines, though there may be some minor discomfort at the specific injection sites. Within a few days, patients will begin to see the changes that will remain for several months before an additional appointment for reinjections needs to be made.
