Botox Injections for Aging Skin
Neuromodulators have been called the “aspirin of the 21st century” due to their versatility and effectiveness. Botox®, the best-known brand, has been safely used in various medical and cosmetic applications for many years. In dermatology, its primary uses are the reduction of lines and wrinkles, as well as hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).
Facial muscle relaxation with these injectables is a popular treatment used to help with the unwanted signs of aging and is a commonly requested treatment from patients in and around Washington, DC.
What types of neuromodulators are offered by Dr. Cheryl Burgess and her team?
At the Center for Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery, we offer Botox® as well as Xeomin, Dysport and Daxxify. Although these products are very similar, there are subtle differences. Daxxify can relax the frown lines as long as 6 months. We can assist you in choosing the best option based on your unique needs.
What are the advantages of botulinum toxin injections as a wrinkle reduction treatment?
Botulinum toxin injections soften lines that are caused by movement. This type of wrinkling occurs most often around the eyes and on the forehead, such as crow’s feet and frown lines. However, a skilled physician can utilize this treatment in other areas, such as reducing marionette lines and softening a square jaw or a puckered chin.
What can I expect from my Botox injections?
Neurotoxins do not cause permanent changes. The results last anywhere from three to six months, depending on the individual. After a number of sessions, you will likely find that you need injections less frequently as your muscles achieve a state of natural relaxation. Because it is safe and long-lasting, yet temporary, this is a wonderful complementary treatment, often used in conjunction with procedures such as laser resurfacing or dermal fillers. It is also an excellent “starter” procedure for new patients.
Are there any risks or complications from Botox injections?
As with any medical treatment, potential risks and side effects can occur. The most common side effect that might occur is mild bruising at the injection site.
