Though these two powerhouse anti-aging treatments are regularly used by experienced cosmetic dermatologists around the world, there is still some confusion among would-be patients as to what can be accomplished with which type of treatment and if there are really any differences to speak of.

In order to understand why you may choose one over the other, we should begin by looking at the various aspects of each type of treatment. Botox is what is called a neuromodulator. When injected into the skin, the real effect is on the muscles that lie beneath. Treated with Botox, muscles are placed into a state of relaxation, reducing contractions with facial expressions. Dermal fillers, on the other hand are injected into skin in areas that have lost volume. The only effect of dermal fillers is directly on the skin, where wrinkles and folds are lifted due to the filling of space beneath them.

One way wrinkles appear on the face is through the years of movement in the muscles beneath them. With all the contracting that occurs on a regular basis, creases eventually form on the skin. These types of wrinkles are ideally treated with Botox, which targets the muscles below the treatment area. After precise Botox injections, the muscles gradually reach an optimal state of relaxation within about ten days. Over the course of a few weeks, you will notice a significant reduction in wrinkles, but no reduction in your natural ability to convey emotions. Botox is often used on the furrows that form between the eyebrows, as well as on the crow’s feet.

Dermal fillers for skin plumping

Wrinkles on the face may also form as the skin is affected by aging and the decreased production of collagen and hyaluronic acid. The result of aging skin is often a loss of elasticity, sagging and deep lines. In areas such as the nasolabial folds around the nose and mouth or the marionette lines, between the mouth and chin, dermal fillers can be injected to occupy the space beneath lines, plumping the skin for a more youthful appearance.
