There are many different types of skin lumps and bumps that can develop. A common one is that of the cyst. A cyst is a bump that has a sac underneath consisting of oils and proteins that become trapped and increase in volume over the course of time. Cysts can become a nuisance, especially if they develop in areas such as creases of the body where they can be uncomfortable. They may also be unsightly and if they are present on the face, they may make patients feel self-conscious about their appearance. These benign bumps can be easily removed during an excision surgery at the Center for Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery.
Dr. Cheryl Burgess can discuss with patients the benefits of cyst removal. Many will want the cyst to be taken off because it has become troublesome. Under local anesthetic, patients will be able to have an excision done in which the cyst is removed. Cyst excision is typically reimbursed by most health insurance plans. Patients will have the cyst removed and the area will be sutured to reduce scarring and allow the area to heal. Patients are given after-care instructions as to how they can care for the area to facilitate faster healing and reduce their risk of infection.
There are times when patients may think that a cyst is a growth that may indicate skin cancer. Skin cancer is a serious issue and should not be taken lightly. Regardless of the skin growth, Dr. Cheryl Burgess will encourage patients to visit her practice annually for a skin cancer screening to check for any unusual growths that may be indicative of a more serious condition such as cancer. Changes in moles or wounds that will not heal properly may signify a bigger problem and should be analyzed by a board certified dermatologist.
