Washington, DC dermatologist describes how Botox works

  • Botox
Botox Washington DC

When patients come to the practice complaining of folds between the eyebrows, on the forehead or even crow’s feet, Dr. Cheryl Burgess of the Center for Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery may suggest patients consider the benefits of Botox.

Washington, DC area patients who are seeking treatment for fine lines and wrinkles are often introduced to a myriad of injectables used for cosmetic enhancement. Most patients who have mild signs of aging are not appropriate candidates for invasive procedures such as surgical face lifts but may benefit from injectables. Our practice offers a wide range of injectables including collagen builders, neuromodulators and dermal fillers. Neuromodulators such as Botox are best used on areas of the face that have wrinkles and folds due to muscle contractions.

As muscles contract, they cause dynamic wrinkles to develop on the skin over time. This is why frown lines occur. Botox is a medication that can be used to relax muscle contractions. In fact, Botox has been used for decades for treatment of many medical conditions including cervical dystonia, overactive bladder and even for dental issues such as TMJ and TMD. Botox has been approved by the FDA for both medical and cosmetic purposes, making it the perfect alternative to a facelift with a plastic surgeon.

When Botox is injected into muscles, it limits the contracting. About one week after the injection, patients will see a noticeable difference in the depth and appearance of their wrinkles and folds. For many Washington, DC area patients, results from Botox may last for approximately six months before reinjection is necessary to maintain a more youthful appearance. While it is impossible to stop or actually reverse, the signs of aging, patients can enjoy a reduction in the appearance of these wrinkles and folds with the use of injectables such as Botox.

Dr. Cheryl Burgess of the Center for Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery in the Washington, DC area is a board certified dermatologist who offers Botox and many other cosmetic enhancement procedures for both men and women to use for dramatic results. Contact her team today to book a consultation appointment and learn more about our offerings in our state-of-the-art dermatological facility.
