She is a Board-certified dermatologist who can help patients by treating scars and making them far less noticeable.

What is scar revision?

When there has been an injury to the skin, it often leaves a scar. These scars can be extremely noticeable, such as keloid scars, or maybe small though bothersome to a patient, such as an ice pick acne scar. To improve one’s aesthetics and rebuild self-confidence, these patients may seek treatment with a dermatologist that can address these scars and remove them or make them far less noticeable.

How is scar revision achieved?

There are many different types of scars, and the type and severity will play a part in the scar revision treatment our team suggests. After an initial evaluation of the skin and a review of the medical history on the patient, Dr. Cheryl Burgess will make a recommendation as to the best scar revision treatment available.

What methods of treatment are used?

The type of treatment performed for scar revision will vary, but may include one or more of these solutions for optimum results:

  • Topical medications – some prescription medications can be used to lessen the appearance of scars, more specifically for scars that can be improved by reducing their redness.
  • Microdermabrasion – patients can stimulate the production of new skin cells in the area by using microdermabrasion treatments, which exfoliate the skin and improve its overall texture and tone.
  • Chemical peels – chemical peels come in many different varieties and strengths, and they can be used to address the scar and other skin concerns as well.
  • Laser skin resurfacing – by using laser light to rejuvenate the skin’s texture and tone, patients can also achieve effective treatment of their scar at the same time!

  • Dermal fillers – patients with depressed scars such as ice pick scars from severe acne may benefit from injections of dermal fillers, which will add volume to the area and smooth the surface.
  • Microneedling-with this treatment, patients will be able to enjoy smoother skin while reducing the appearance of scars at the same time.
  • Surgical excision – in the case of tight scars or keloid scars, patients may need to have their scars removed with traditional surgical excision. However, this can leave alternative scars, and should therefore only be performed by a Board-certified dermatologist for the best results.

There is no one-size-fits-all solution for every type of scar, so it is essential that patients work with their dermatologist to choose the treatment most appropriate for their specific needs. Dr. Cheryl Burgess evaluates a patient’s skin and determines the type of scar they want to treat before making a recommendation. There are also factors such as cost and time that may need to be considered when patients are choosing a treatment appropriate for their needs. We welcome patients in and around the area to book their consultation visit with our staff to find out how scar revision can boost their confidence and help them feel more attractive!
