You can trust the expertise of Dr. Cheryl M. Burgess. As a Board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Burgess has developed extensive knowledge and skill in the diagnosis and treatment of numerous skin conditions, including acne. Additionally, Dr. Burgess and our teams at the Center for Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery have considerable experience treating a diverse range of patients. This experience matters, because our teams in Washington, D.C. and Annapolis, Maryland know how to safely and effectively treat all skin types. We have highlighted three acne treatments below, but it is important to understand that the best approach for you is tailored to factors such as:
We may also combine some of the following treatments to clear your skin.
If you have not had success with OTC products, Dr. Burgess may prescribe medications that are applied topically (directly to the skin). These drugs include retinoids like tretinoin, which you may know by brand names like Retin-A®. This class of medications is designed to clear pores. By treating acne at its source (clogged pores), we can both clear existing and prevent future whiteheads, blackheads, and some types of pimples. These medications may also help our patients with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which refers to dark spots that develop after acne clears. Topical retinoids may be incorporated into a long-term acne management plan, too.
Some of the medications that Dr. Burgess prescribes work systemically, or throughout the body. For instance, antibiotic therapy may be prescribed to fight the bacteria that causes acne. It also helps to reduce the inflammation associated with acne. Antibiotics taken in pill or tablet form by mouth are generally more potent than those applied to the skin as topical creams. They may be best for patients with moderate to severe pimples. Stubborn hormonal acne may also be treated effectively with medications such as combined oral contraceptives and spironolactone. Some of these medications may be suitable for those who have not had success with other treatments.
To achieve and support the best possible results, we may perform therapies at our office. These options include skin resurfacing treatments, such as microdermabrasion and chemical peels. Resurfacing may also be performed with lasers or other light-based therapies. Such skin services help to lift the dead, pore-clogging skin cells that tend to build up on the surface. Additional treatments are available for those patients with [NH1] severe and painful cystic acne, and to soften scars caused by past breakouts.
No two treatment plans are the same, because your needs are truly one of a kind. Our care is never cookie-cutter, always compassionate, and really works. Request a consultation with Dr. Burgess today. Call our Washington, D.C. office at (202) 955-5757 or our Annapolis, MD office at (410) 224 1195 .
