Laser Services

At the Center for Dermatology we use the following types of lasers to perform our treatments:

Tattoo Removal - A tattoo depending on the method and technique used, it may be easier to remove if the pigment is evenly injected in the same level of the skin. A tattoo that has been on the skin for a considerable length of time may be more difficult to remove than a new one. There are several excellent methods of tattoo removal available today. The method that the physician chooses will depend upon the size of the tattoo and it's location as well as the length of time it has been on the skin; and generally requires multiple laser sessions. How the patient heals may also be a factor in the decision.

In recent times, many physicians consider laser surgery one of the best methods of tattoo removal. Today, the Q-switched Nd:YAG, Q-switched Alexandrite and the Q-switched Ruby are among the most frequently used lasers today for the removal of unwanted tattoos. They are all employed in a similar manner. If necessary, a cream to numb the skin can be applied prior to the treatment. Pulses of light from the laser are directed onto the tattoo breaking up the tattoo pigment. Over the next several weeks the body's scavenger cells remove the treated pigmented areas. More than one treatment is usually necessary to remove all of the tattoo.

Regardless of which method of tattoo removal is used, some scarring or color variations are likely to remain. Healing time varies depending upon the size and depth of the tattoo, the procedure used and the patient's healing process. It is important for the patient to discuss with the physician the various procedures, how they are performed, and the probable results. Care of the treated area must also be discussed.

Laser Hair Removal - Light hair removal works by emitting pulses of intense light into the hair follicles. The light is absorbed by the pigment in the follicles and converted to heat. The heat then loosens the hair and disables the cells responsible for growing new hair. An laser hair removal treatment package consists of a series of five to eight treatments, each lasting 30-45 minutes.

Pigmentation Lesions - The mechanism of pigment lesion removal is based upon selective destruction of unwanted pigment. The lesion may darken and crusts after treatment, and is naturally sloughed off the skin within two weeks.

Vascular Lesions - The absorption of pulsed light in red blood cells, and the resultant thermal action inside the blood vessels resulting damage to the vessel, all of which contributes to the degeneration and disappearance of any visible vessels.

Other Procedures Offered:

Mesotherapy - Mesotherapy introduces microscopic quantities of homeopathic medications, traditional pharmaceuticals, vitamins, minerals and amino acids into the skins to treat a variety of conditions such as body sculpting and skin rejuvenation. All medications are selected for the specific condition being treated. The needles used in Mesotherapy are very short and thin. Once the medication is delivered , the body is stimulated to heal itself. Since the targeted areas are directly reached by this procedure, smaller amounts of medication are needed.

Micro-injection are relatively painless, and the potential side effects are limited to: burning that can last for 15 - 20 minutes, minor swelling that can last 1 - 5 days (this can vary by patient), minor skin discoloration, which will resolve on it's own, and a slight risk of infection (which may occur whenever any injection is administered).

Sclerotherapy - Sclerotherapy was developed in the 1920s for the treatment of spider veins (telangiectasias), small purple and red blood vessels. Spider veins are hereditary, and while most commonly found on the thigh or lower leg, can form virtually anywhere on the leg, from the uppermost region of the thigh to the ankle. Occasionally, spider veins will appear on the face. Sclerotherapy has proven to be a very popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure.

The veins to be treated are marked while the patient is standing. Larger veins are usually treated first. Sclerotherapy uses an injection method saline (a salt solution) or detergents. The Nd:Yag laser may also be used. The agent used causes inflammation of the wall of the tiny blood vessels. This in turn makes the vessel walls collapse, thus completely obliterating the lumen (opening) in the small vein. Over time, the spider veins become very light in color and many gradually disappear. A typical treatment lasts from 30 minutes to an hour. Injection sclerotherapy can be an excellent alternative to surgery, provided the patient's venous system is not affected.

Treatment for Hair Loss/ Hair Transplants/ Male Pattern Baldness - Baldness and thinning of scalp hair are conditions that affect almost one-third of all men in this country and, though fewer in number, some women as well. There are many causes for hair loss including high fever as a result of severe infection, thyroid disease, inadequate protein in the diet, certain medications, cancer treatments, childbirth and birth control pills. Many of these are reversible; however, other types of baldness may be permanent, including those which are a result of accidents, operations and inflammatory or infectious diseases of the scalp. One of the most common types of permanent hair loss is male and female pattern baldness. This condition, inherited from either side of the family, starts when a person is in his or her teens, twenties or thirties. While women with this inherited tendency do not become bald, they can develop considerable thinning of the hair.

Although many people are unconcerned about hair loss, others are distressed and look for ways to remedy the condition. Hair pieces are a satisfactory solution for some, while others find them unnatural looking or difficult to maintain. New products on the market that claim to restore hair growth have had limited success.

Split Earlobe Repair - If your earlobes are torn, split or stretched from trauma or years of wearing heavy earrings, you are a candidate for earlobe repair. The abnormal appearance of earlobes can be an embarrassment and having your earlobes repaired is a simple office procedure that will allow you to wear earrings again.
